When the weather turns gloomy and rain is falling left and right, it sets the perfect tone to engage in some fun indoor activities that lift your spirits. So welcome to this rainy-day activities guide.
Let’s dive into my top recommendations for embracing this rainy day and turning it into an opportunity for joy and relaxation.
1. Enjoy yourself with a good book
There’s no better day I can imagine to curl up in a captivating book than on a rainy day. Curl up under a blanket, make a pot of tea, light some candles, and create the perfect reading environment to lose yourself in a novel or non-fiction book. I’m currently reading The Midnight Library by Matt Haig.
My favorite hack to get into a reading vibe is to put on ambient music on YouTube. It works like a charm. My current favorite for rainy-day reading is a Hogwarts ambiance video with rain and thunder (I’m not a nerd, you are… ).
But if that’s not your cup of tea, I’m sure you could find plenty of ambiance music videos you will enjoy.
2. Binge-watch a TV series you’ve been wanting to see
Transform your living room into a cozy home theater and start a marathon of a good movie series or TV show. There are a lot of mini-series on Netflix with about 10 episodes, which are just perfect to keep yourself glued to the screen all day long.
Make yourself some homemade popcorn, dim the lights, close the curtains, and binge away. If you can find some people willing to leave their house in the rain, you can invite them over of course!

3. Bake yourself something delicious
Imagine the warmth and comfort you feel when the smell of your fresh baked goods fills up your home. Homemade treats are also a better way of indulging compared to store-bought treats.
Whether you’re into chocolate chip cookies, brownies, cinnamon rolls, or carrot cake, you still have full control over what you put in your mouth. No unnecessary additives and conservatives, no excessive amounts of sugar.
I hope your pantry is well-stocked for a rainy baking day to satisfy your cravings so you can get started right away.
4. Have a Pampering Spa day at home
Treat yourself to a luxurious spa day without even leaving the comfort of your home. Set the tone for a spa day by filling the room with comforting aromas, like lavender or eucalyptus.
Some staples in my spa days are doing a hair and face mask, giving myself a manicure, clearing any blackheads, and taking a long ‘do-all-the-steps-shower’, while adding some joy with a shower bomb.
5. Do a jigsaw puzzle
Set your dinner table up to have some fun with a jigsaw puzzle! Old-fashioned as they might be, I still enjoy piecing together a puzzle. It’s a great way to be fully engaged in the present moment. And I feel it just pairs with rainy days like bread and butter!
You can put on some classical music playlist, lo-fi, or a podcast, and just watch the hours fly by. It’s also a great activity to engage in together. If you can’t finish the puzzle in one go, you can save your unfinished project in a puzzle mat.
6. Find some good journal prompts for a specific topic you want to improve on
Another great way to make the most of this rainy day inside the house is to journal with some journal prompts. Take some time to figure out what area of your life you would like to improve, or give some attention to.
Do you want to feel more confident? Could you use some clarity in your life? Do you want to let go of a specific negative experience? Grab a notebook and get writing! Journal prompts are a great way to get some clarity of mind. As soon as the sun comes out, you’ll have a newfound energy.
7. Create a playlist for rainy days
Upon writing this, at least 5 songs are popping up in my head that involve rain. Obviously, you could create a playlist that is filled with songs about rain just for fun, and see how far you would come. A bit tacky, but fun nonetheless!
However, you could also opt for creating a playlist that is a little more suited to your personal taste, so you’ll actually want to listen to it on all the rainy days to come! I’m thinking jazz, lo-fi, classical music, R&B. Whatever rows your boat really! Try to create a list that will be your go-to playlist for rainy days, so you can put it on as soon as you want to engulf yourself in the rainy-day vibe.
8. Get creative
A rainy day gives you the perfect opportunity to get creative. Imagine cozying up indoors with the rain as your background music, a pot of your favorite tea, and your crafting supplies spread out before you.
Engaging in some crafting can be very therapeutic, as it’s a great way to connect with yourself and your senses in the present moment.
If you haven’t really found your craft yet, consider exploring some! Some easy crafts you could start with are making ceramics with air dry clay, or making some cool paintings with watercolor. Following some beginner tutorials will have you enjoying yourself all day!
9. Prepare some tapas
Dim the lights, pour yourself a glass of wine, and create your own culinary fiesta! No better way to treat yourself than with some homemade tapas spread out in front of you on the dinner table. Whether spent alone or with your friends and loved ones, enjoying some food on a rainy day sounds like quite a self-care activity to me.
10. Redecorate a room or section in your home
Gather your seasonal decoration pieces and add some life to your living area! Some vibrant throw pillows or a different rug can make all the difference. If you’ve outgrown your current decor, don’t hesitate to try something new, like creating a gallery wall.
Anything that reflects your personal style could add to that excited feeling of redecorating your home.
11. Have a gaming session
One of my go-to’s for rainy days is to have a gaming session. Oh boy, do I love gaming. I can lose myself in a video game the entire day, even when the sun is shining. But I always enjoy my gaming sessions the most on a rainy day.
Especially if you are a person who can feel guilty about spending all day behind a computer screen, rainy days can be a great excuse to escape into the screen for hours! I got your back.
12. Start a herb garden
There is something so rewarding and therapeutic about growing your own foods indoors. A herb garden is a great way to bring some nature and greenery into your home, while also being a convenient and sustainable way to add some extra flavor and nutrients to your dishes! Just imagine the scent of rosemary, thyme, and basil filling up your kitchen while your cooking.
So grab your gardening gloves, seeds, soil, and some pots, and plant some babies! However, if you want to take it seriously and are planning to make use of your indoor herb garden frequently, consider setting up an indoor growing system. You’ll be assured of fresh, vibrant herbs all year long.
13. Do a yoga session
Make the most of these rainy-day activities by enjoying a rejuvenating yoga session first. Stepping onto your yoga mat on a rainy day creates a perfect opportunity to reconnect with yourself and your body.
Tune in with your breath and your body to relieve any tension that may have accumulated in your muscles. Engage in some gentle stretching and feel the relief of stress leaving your body. You will be able to tackle the rest of the day feeling grounded and refreshed.
14. Watch a documentary
Anyone can lose track of time and space when David Attenborough comes out of their speakers. Watching a nature documentary is a relaxing way to spend a rainy day. Extra rainy-day points if you watch a documentary of the rainforest of course.
If you’ve already watched them all, or if nature documentaries don’t catch your interest, a good recommendation is the Social Dilemma on Netflix. This documentary explores the impact of social media on society, highlighting the addictive nature of social media and its influence on our behavior and politics.
15. Relax and enjoy the sound of rain with your favorite cup of tea
An activity that can easily be overlooked: Just simply be. I’m not even kidding. Make a pot of tea and just sit on a comfortable chair. Put your phone on do not disturb, keep your TV off, and just blend in with the room. Become aware of your body, and notice the soothing sounds of the falling rain around you.
Relaxing and doing nothing is an activity that a lot of people don’t even know how to do anymore. But it’s such an important skill to master! And yes, I’m calling it skill for a reason. Being in stillness and enjoying it is something that you can improve upon.
In the beginning, it might feel uncomfortable. But I bet you will be surprised by the experience if you fully commit to doing nothing. If you haven’t “done nothing” in a while, this might be a perfect opportunity to tune into yourself and the world around you.
16. Take care of your plants
Something that I often feel compelled to do on a rainy day is take extra care of my house plants. Your plants would probably kill to experience a rainy day themselves, so consider giving your plants a well-deserved shower! I promise you they will love it.
Their leaves will be more aesthetic since all the dust and goo will be rinsed off (Hello, bright and shiny green leaves!). And not only that; they will also be better able to photosynthesize.
Aside from giving them a good rinse, you can pluck any dead leaves, give them a trim, and give the ones that have outgrown their pots a new home. Another option is to fertilize them, which should be done every few weeks anyway! Your plants will thank you.
Now go have fun!
I hope these rainy-day activities have inspired you to have fun indoors as the rain continues to fall outside. Whether you’re indulging in a bit of self-care or starting a new creative adventure, remember to be engaged in the present moment and grant yourself some guilt-free joy! Don’t forget to save this pin for your future rainy days.
