If you need any reason to buy that slightly too expensive but stunning notebook, I’ve got your back! In this blog post, I will lay out some of the benefits of daily journaling that you can’t ignore.

All jokes aside, daily journaling is a practice that can completely turn your life around. Pinterest is filled with blog posts on how daily journaling can benefit you.

And all for good reason: Because it does.

So I want this life-changing information to reach as many souls as possible!

Disclosure: Upon making purchases using the links in the posts on this website, I could receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

I want journaling to become just as important to you as brushing your teeth, drinking enough water, or going to sleep. For it to become one of those things you do without asking.

By the end of this blog post, you’ll want to get yourself a fresh new notebook and start journaling right away because of its’ amazing benefits.

Daily Journaling and Morning pages

In this blogpost I refer to journaling as: the practice of writing whatever comes to mind without restrictions.

This is also known as “stream of consciousness-writing” which implies you write down whatever enters your conscious mind.

You simply write whatever you feel like writing about.

Be it what’s bothering or excites you, be it what you want to eat for dinner, be it what you need to do today, be it what intentions you have for the day, whatever really! It’s super freeing because you are in full control of what you write and devote time each day to check in with yourself.

Besides this form of journaling, there are plenty of alterations to this common journal practice. But this blog post focuses predominantly on journaling about whatever comes to mind (Read more about journaling here.)

Another term used for this journaling practice is morning pages.

The practice of writing morning pages involves writing 3 full pages every single morning before you start your day. This practice is a slightly more specific form of journaling (describing when to journal and how long to journal for), but boils down to the same thing.

I do write in the morning before I start my day, but I do not force myself to write 3 pages daily. Sometimes it can be less than that and that is totally okay if you ask me. You can still get all these benefits even if you don’t write 3 full pages daily.

Another important note is that writing whatever comes to mind can be done at any time of the day.

That’s one of the reasons I would rather refer to this practice as journaling instead of morning pages, since it’s a more common term and more accurately reflects the utility of this practice.

However, if you want to challenge yourself and build a habit of writing 3 pages a day, I applaud you.

Let’s see how daily journaling can help you flip your life around!

Benefits of Daily Journaling

1. Daily Journaling Helps You Get to Know Yourself Better

When you start journaling every day you’ll notice that, over time, you will feel more connected to yourself and to who you are as a person. Writing daily journal entries means that you will have a notebook filled with your thoughts, feelings, experiences, memories, choices, and desires.

This is incredibly helpful to get to know yourself better and to discover who you truly are. You’ll get more in touch with what you consider important in life, how you feel about things, and what you want for yourself.

Simply put: you gain awareness of the self.

If you are someone who wants to get to know themselves better, starting a daily journal practice is the best way you can start. 2. Daily Journaling Brings You Clarity

Journaling can bring you a lot of clarity since writing your thoughts on paper organizes the chatter in your mind. It makes your thoughts somewhat tangible, making it easier for you to become aware of them as opposed to them “just floating around in your head in a disorganized manner”.

Especially if you consider yourself to be an overthinker, or if you get stuck in your head a lot, journaling can be a good way to calm the thoughts in your mind.

It helps you structure your thinking, bringing clarity and insight to your inner world.

This leaves you experiencing less internal chaos and helps you feel more grounded. It can also help you bend certain thoughts that no longer serve you to more calming thoughts, bringing clarity and peace.

3. Daily Journaling Gives You Focus for the Day

Daily journaling allows you to bring attention to what tasks need to get done for the day, and how you could go about fulfilling them.

The beauty of journaling about daily tasks is that you can break them up into smaller tasks, making them easier to execute.

You can also write about any obstacles you might expect to arise upon fulfilling your daily tasks. Is there something you’re scared of that is holding you back? Is there something you need to take care of first before you can get to the task? How will you handle a lack of motivation if it arises?

These insights help you tackle the day and increase the odds that you’ll actually bring your tasks to completion.

Depending on what part of the day you are journaling, you can adjust your focus accordingly.

If you’re journaling in the morning, you can set tasks and priorities for the day ahead if you. If you’re journaling in the evening, you can plan for the next day.

4. Daily Journaling Helps You Achieve Your Goals

If you have certain goals you want to achieve, such as becoming fit or setting up a side hustle to increase your income, journaling can support you in achieving your goals massively.

The main reason is that you have a space where you can actively keep yourself aligned with your goal.

What progress have you made so far? What is working for you and what is not working for you? Where are you slacking? What do you need to pay more attention to?

The difficult thing about achieving goals is resisting the distractions of daily life. Journaling daily can help you deal with those distractions by becoming aware of them. You can use your journal time to reflect on your progress and set a direction for yourself.

Writing about the process of achieving your goals brings you valuable information about how you go about getting closer to your goal and whether that’s effective or not. This information makes it much easier to follow through, stay on track, and keep you more accountable.

Journaling can therefore be a great tool to achieve your goals.

5. Daily Journaling Helps You Get in Touch With Your Emotions

Writing in your journal every day creates a moment to check in with how you feel. Turning your feelings and emotions into words helps you to make sense of them.

This helps you get more in touch with your emotions because you’ll become accustomed to what each emotion feels like in your body.

Over time, you will become better at recognizing feelings of anxiety, sadness, joy, et cetera.

This developed awareness of your feelings and emotions will also spill over to your daily life, which allows you to be more in touch with your intuition.

You will become more sensitive to your inner experience, making it much easier to get in touch with that inner compass.

If you want to get more in touch with your emotions or want to learn to foster your intuition, journaling daily is going to help you tremendously.

6. Daily Journaling Helps You Keep Track of Your Development

Since you are writing in your journal every day, you will gather a bunch of entries throughout the year. It can be very insightful and satisfying to flip through all the pages and see the development of your journal entries over time.

You will clearly see your thoughts and feeling-states from a couple of months ago, and remind yourself of how you’ve developed since then.

On top of that, you can save your journals throughout the years, which can be really fun to read back a few years down the line.

Just imagine reading journal entries of yourself, 10 years from now.

7. Daily Journaling Reduces Stress and Anxiety

If you know yourself to be a person who struggles with anxiety or gets stressed easily, journaling will be a massively helpful tool in your life. It is something you can simply fall back on if you feel overwhelmed, at any time of the day.

When we’re in an anxious state, it is easy to get sucked into your mind by all the dreadful thoughts that keep going on a loop. Writing out these thoughts helps diminish their power and intensity.

Likewise, it can also feel like a relief to write down all the anxious thoughts that are crippling you.

It will be easier to go on with your life after writing down all the thoughts that keep your mind cluttered. This way journaling can be a great “quick fix” to cope with your anxiety in a healthy way.

Eventually, you will even find that journaling helps you find mental calm and eventually shapes your anxious thoughts into more realistic ones over time.

8. Daily Journaling Can Help You Get Through Tough Times

Sometimes you’ll go through phases in life where the waters are rough. These phases are part of the natural ebb and flow of life and help shape your character.

However, sometimes our thoughts and feelings can cripple or paralyze us. Having an outlet for your internal words can minimize the damaging effects that these phases can have on you.

Journaling can help you process the emotions, stress, and thoughts that can arise when you’re going through a tough time.

When you are journaling every day, it becomes hard to suppress your feelings or to bypass situations that leave you feeling uneasy.

Daily journaling allows you no way to escape the emotions and thoughts that accompany tough times.

Writing about what you’re going through creates a space for yourself where you can vent about all the things that bother you.

This way, you can process the turmoil of life instantly without pushing it under the rug, which prevents stress from building up in your body.

Journaling can therefore be a way to maximize the insights and lessons that you gain from these hardships of life.

9. Daily Journaling Helps You Find Alignment

One of the foundations of life is that it is in motion constantly, and this same principle applies to human beings as well. Who you are as a person, and what you desire, changes as time goes on.

You’re going through the motions of daily life, minding your business. But over time, you’ll realize that you start to feel differently about certain things.

At one point in time, you may have concluded one thing, only to find out that at a later point in life you completely think the opposite.

What you desired at one point, might not be what you want 6 months later. How you felt about a certain situation when it happened, might not be how you feel about that exact same situation right now. The way you were going about achieving a certain goal last summer, doesn’t work for you anymore.

We humans change over time.

This is a natural part of life and is part of its’ beauty if you ask me.

Journaling helps you become aware of the changes that occur within your being. It helps you stay in alignment, or refind alignment with your current self faster.

This way it becomes easier to stay connected to yourself and the path you want to walk in your life.

10. Daily Journaling Helps You Figure Out What is Important to You

A side-effect of writing in your journal every day is that you will see patterns emerge in your writing topics.

There are going to be certain things that you are writing about daily, or at least weekly. After a while, it becomes obvious which topics you can’t shut up about.

These are topics in your life that are important to you and that deserve extra care in your life.

Writing about this daily can help you focus on the things that matter most in your life and give it the importance it deserves.

11. Daily Journaling Helps Declutter Your Mind

Simultaneously, writing endlessly about the things that you find important can also help you create space in your mind for the rest of the day.

When you give yourself a designated time to “uninterruptedly ramble on” about certain topics that keep you busy throughout the day, you’ll find it less necessary to think about it all day long.

If you’re someone who tends to obsess over things, this point applies to you in particular.

To maximize the decluttering effects of journaling, you could explicitly agree with yourself to obsess about certain topics solely during journal sessions, and to leave them there when you close your journal.

The idea is to let it go and not take it with you for the rest of the day.

Journal closed = go on with your day.

This one thing alone can help you become more present in the here and now, and less stuck in your head. Another pillar for experiencing inner peace.

12. Journaling Can Be Useful in a Wide Range of Contexts

Lastly, I’ll end this blog post with some of the practical benefits of daily journaling.

Journaling should not be underestimated for it’s utility. I hope that is all clear by now.

In addition to that, journaling is also incredibly versatile and can be a useful tool in a wide range of different contexts and for different purposes.

You can use journaling to help you achieve specific goals. You can use journaling to get yourself through heartbreak. You can use journaling to become less shy, or to deal with any insecurities you may have.

The possibilities with journaling really are endless.

A great way to maximize these benefits of daily journaling is with journal prompts. They compel you to reflect on a specific topic such as confidence, anxiety, or your relationships. These prompts can help you gain insight and focus regarding that topic.

If you would like a more guided form like this for daily journaling, getting started with a self-discovery journal might help you build the habit more easily.

However, since there are many different alterations to journaling, you can experiment with different styles of journaling and see what works best for you in which specific situations.

The fun part is that you create the rules!

So don’t be scared to personally craft your ideal journal practice.

Have fun building your daily journal habit!
